Sarah's Corner-- Nevernight Review

Good Evening ladies and gents! It is time for another review from your host, your ghost host! Jkjk I wanted to use that line somehow. ( For those that don't know it, it is from Haunted Mansion ride at Disney World ). Let us begin!

In a land where three suns almost never set, a fledgling killer joins a school of assassins, seeking vengeance against the powers who destroyed her family. Daughter of an executed traitor, Mia Corvere is barely able to escape her father’s failed rebellion with her life. Alone and friendless, she hides in a city built from the bones of a dead god, hunted by the Senate and her father’s former comrades. But her gift for speaking with the shadows leads her to the door of a retired killer, and a future she never imagined. Now, Mia is apprenticed to the deadliest flock of assassins in the entire Republic—the Red Church. If she bests her fellow students in contests of steel, poison and the subtle arts, she’ll be inducted among the Blades of the Lady of Blessed Murder, and one step closer to the vengeance she desires. But a killer is loose within the Church’s halls, the bloody secrets of Mia’s past return to haunt her, and a plot to bring down the entire congregation is unfolding in the shadows she so loves. Will she even survive to initiation, let alone have her revenge?

Alright, before I begin I want to warn that there will be spoilers ahead. Now that you know that then proceed at your own risk!!

This book has had soooo many good reviews and all around it is the main thing I am seeing at the moment. With lots of praise, I decided I would give it a shot as I wait for my copy of Ninth House to arrive. Let's just say I was not disappointed by the story, but fair warning: do not get attached to any of the characters.

I have previously read a book by the talented Jay Kristoff, Aurora Rising and though I had a few minor annoyances I thoroughly enjoyed the book and so I had high expectations for this one. The writing was definitely different ( yes, the other book had two authors and this is geared to adults) but I really got annoyed by the annotations. At one point I would just glance down, see if it was witty, and if it wasn't i would just continue on without reading them. I feel if it was super important it should be in the main story and not just a thing to glance at as if I were reading a text book.

Other than the notes, I did enjoy the story. The beginning, I was just trying to understand the world. I don't really think I had any dull moments, but I found myself wanting to know more about the characters. And let me just say, speaking of characters, there was a lot of wtf-ery. Here I am enjoying Tric and then bam! He is stabbed and killed, so I go oh okay well...... maybe I will enjoy Cassius! Nope, bam. Dead. Dead, dead, dead. So now I am just going whelp...... don't get too attached and all will be well! Though I do thoroughly enjoy Mister Kindly. Mia is decent for a protagonist I would say, she isn't the typical girl assassin who is super cocky ( example..... Celaena from Throne of Glass ) so I hope she continues to stay that way. As for any other characters..... I do want to learn more about Hush, but trying not to get excited for his character development since ya know, he might die and all.

That is about it! I am excited to read Godsgrave, but Ninth House will be here soon and so I will read that before I start on Godsgrave or The Shattered Realm Series!
